Local, state and federal officials were aware of the dangers posed by the Cheboygan Lock and Dam for years before floodwaters pushed it to the brink of collapse, records show.

Water levels are reported to be dropping at the Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex, according to Michigan State Police.

Officials say few people are in direct danger below the dam, but the evacuation zone includes infrastructure critical to northern Michigan.
